When the bases are loaded, every base is a force base. The fielder doesn’t have to tag the runner. Step on the bag with the ball before the runner gets there. This simplifies the play. The hardest part is remembering it under pressure.

What you need: A full diamond. Three runners (or three cones marking runners). A fielding team. A coach with a bat or balls.

Setup: Bases loaded. Infield in normal position.

How to run it:

  1. Coach explains: bases loaded, no force at home only if runner can’t be forced home (with two outs, force everywhere; with less than two, runner advances on his own from third).
  2. For this drill, treat every situation as a force everywhere.
  3. Coach hits a ground ball. Fielder catches and steps on the closest base for the force.
  4. If they have time, they throw to another base for a second out (a double play).
  5. Do 8 reps. Hit balls to different positions.

What to watch: Are they tagging when they should be stepping on the bag? Force out only requires the bag, not the runner. Tagging wastes time.

If they’re struggling: Drop the double play attempt. Just one out per rep.

If they’ve got it: Add live runners. The fielders have to make the play under real game speed.
