What you actually need
A starter set is the single biggest purchase. US Kids Golf is the gold standard for junior sets because they’re properly sized for kids, not miniaturized adult clubs. A new set runs $150-250. If budget is tight, used clubs are fine—look for sets from Play It Again Sports or OfferUp. The right club length matters far more than the brand.
A glove ($15-25) goes on the non-dominant hand and improves grip. Most junior golfers wear one. A half-dozen balls ($10-15) is the starting inventory. Kids lose balls constantly, so you’ll buy more, but six gets you going.
That’s legitimately all you need. The course provides the rest.

Used gear notes
Used clubs are a smart buy. Check the club faces for dents or deep gouges—minor wear is fine. Make sure the grips are in decent shape or budget another $2-3 per club to regrip. Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Play It Again Sports all have junior club sets regularly.
What you can skip
Skip the golf bag until your child is committed. A drawstring bag works fine. Skip golf shoes—regular athletic shoes work. Skip rangefinders and training aids. Skip branded golf apparel. Kids don’t care and you’re overpaying.
