The rebound isn’t the end of the play. It’s the start. Fast teams turn defensive boards into offense in three seconds. The outlet pass is the link.

What you need: A hoop, a basketball, two players.

Setup: One player at the rim. One player at the elbow extended (the wing, about 18 feet from the basket).

How to run it:

  1. Coach shoots a missed shot.
  2. Rebounder grabs with two hands and lands hard with the ball ripped to the side opposite their pivot foot.
  3. Rebounder pivots away from the defender (imaginary or live), faces the wing, and throws a two-handed overhead pass to the wing.
  4. Wing catches and dribbles up court.
  5. Reset. Do 8 reps. Rotate roles.

What to watch: The pivot. Most kids land and immediately throw. That’s how the ball gets stripped. Pivot first, see the floor, then throw.

If they’re struggling: Drop the wing. Just practice rebound and pivot. Add the outlet next session.

If they’ve got it: Add a defender harassing the rebounder. The pivot and outlet have to happen under pressure.
