The reverse layup goes around the back of the rim. It’s used when the defender is in the direct layup line. This intro version uses the backboard from the reverse angle.

What you need: Basketball. 8-foot basket. Flat court.

Setup: Kid starts on the right wing about 12 feet from the basket.

How to run it:

  1. Cue: Plant, Up, Lay, Land.
  2. Dribble toward the basket from the right.
  3. Plant your inside foot, step up, and instead of laying it off the near side of the backboard, reach around and lay it off the far side (the side facing away from where you started).
  4. The ball comes off the glass and falls toward the basket.
  5. Do 5 reverse layups from the right side. Rest. Do 5 from the left side.
  6. Do 2 rounds per side.

What to watch: Are they using the backboard or is the ball floating away? The backboard is still the key. Reach around the rim and use the glass.

If they’re struggling: Move closer to the basket (5 feet). Slow the approach. Practice the footwork without the ball first.

If they’ve got it: Do reverse layups with a defender playing light pressure. Builds skill under game conditions.
