A flag puller who lunges at the wrong moment misses. Good defenders mirror the offensive player until the offensive player commits, then pull. This drill builds the patience to wait for the moment.
What you need: Flag belts and flags. Open grass.
Setup: Two players face each other 5 yards apart. Offensive player wears flags. Defender does not.
How to run it:
- Offensive player jogs forward making cuts left and right.
- Defender stays in a low athletic stance and mirrors the cuts. Shuffle steps. No crossing feet.
- Defender stays 2 yards in front of the offensive player.
- When the offensive player breaks toward an open spot, the defender steps and pulls the flag.
- Reset. Switch roles. Do 6 reps each side.
What to watch: The defender’s feet. If feet cross, balance breaks and the offensive player gets past. Shuffle only.
If they’re struggling: Slow the offensive player to walking speed.
If they’ve got it: Add a goal line behind the defender. The offensive player has to reach the line to score. Adds pressure to pull at the right time.
