Situational softball at this age means making decisions under pressure. This drill builds a hitter’s comfort in high-leverage spots by running real game scenarios at game speed.

Equipment needed: 30 softballs, a pitcher, a catcher, a full infield, one hitter.

Setup: Hitter at the plate. Pitcher throwing live. Infield in ready position.

How to run it:

  1. Scenario 1: 0-2 count, runners on first and second, one out. Pitcher throws three pitches. Hitter is thinking contact, moving the ball.
  2. Scenario 2: 2-0 count, bases loaded, two outs. Pitcher throws three pitches. Hitter is thinking drive ball.
  3. Scenario 3: 3-1 count, runner on third, no outs. Pitcher throws one pitch. Hitter is sitting fastball.
  4. Scenario 4: 2-2 count, runner on first, one out. Pitcher throws two pitches. Game situation.

Run 10 pitches per scenario (or until the hitter makes an out).

What to look for: Pitch selection and approach. Does the hitter adjust to the count? A 0-2 count is different from a 2-0. If they’re hitting the same way, they’re not reading the situation.

Variation: For younger kids (13), reduce to two scenarios and increase the ball count in the pitcher’s favor so they’re forced to be aggressive. For advanced kids, add a third-base coach calling plays.
