The block is the front line of defense. Jump straight up at the net, hands above the tape, palms facing the attacker. The block isn’t about contact, it’s about taking up space. This drill builds the position.

What you need: A net at regulation height, a player.

Setup: Player at the net, hands ready in front of the chest.

How to run it:

  1. Player jumps straight up (no approach).
  2. Both arms extend up, hands above the net tape, palms facing the opposite court.
  3. Hands are wide (about 12 inches apart) to take up the most space.
  4. Land soft, balanced, ready to play the next ball.
  5. Do 10 reps. Mix in lateral shuffles before the jump.

What to watch: Arm position at the peak. If the elbows bend or the hands are below the net, the block is useless. Arms straight up, hands above the tape.

If they’re struggling: Lower the net. Or hold a stick at hand height the player has to reach.

If they’ve got it: Add a hitter on the other side. Player blocks a real spike.
