The forearm pass is where volleyball skill begins. Young players need to hit a specific target, not just get the ball up. This drill builds accuracy.
Equipment needed: 4 cones, 4 balls, 4 targets (hula hoops or chalk circles).
Setup: Place one hula hoop or marked circle at the net (about 3 feet wide). Players line up about 10 feet away, one per target.
How to run it:
- Coach or partner tosses the ball to the player at about chest height.
- Player passes the ball into the target at the net. The pass should arc and land inside the circle.
- Player retrieves the ball and returns to ready position.
- Do 8 reps per player, alternating targets.
What to look for:
The pass should be controlled, not hard. If the ball is being blasted, it’s out of control. The platform (arms) should be flat, with hands together. The ball should leave the platform at about waist height with a smooth arc. If the ball is wobbling or spinning, the platform is off. Feet should be shoulder-width apart, knees bent, ready to move.
Variation: Move the target to the left and right. Players now have to adjust their platform angle to redirect the ball. This teaches directional passing without introducing new skills.
