In a real game, the bump comes off a serve. The coach toss is the bridge. Ball comes from across the net at a downward angle. Player has to get into position, form the platform, and pass to the setter target. This is the rep that translates to the game.
What you need: A volleyball, a net (or rope at net height), three players (coach + passer + target).
Setup: Coach on one side of the net at the back line. Passer on the other side at the back of the court. Setter target at the net.
How to run it:
- Cue: Ready, Platform, Angle, Push.
- Coach tosses overhand (or actual serve at this level) to the passer’s area.
- Passer reads the ball, gets into position behind it, forms the platform.
- Angle the platform toward the setter target. Push the ball with the legs.
- Pass should arrive at setter target chest-high, 8-10 feet from the net.
What to watch: The angle of the platform. Tilt the platform toward the target, not the ceiling. The angle is what aims the ball.
If they’re struggling: Slower coach tosses. Bigger target (a chair or bucket the pass has to land in).
If they’ve got it: Add real serves from across the net. Add multiple passers (rotate every 3 reps).
