Your kid has seen it. Another player walked up to the plate with it. Same brand as a pro player wears. Suddenly your kid needs it.
“Everyone has one,” they say. Not true. But three kids on the team do. And that’s enough to feel like everyone.
The ask always comes the same way
“Can we get the Marucci Elite? Grayson has it. It’s $245.” Your kid has researched. They know the model. They know the price. They’ve gone full sales engineer on you.
Your instinct is no. That’s a lot of money for a stick. But here’s the thing: your kid is getting better. They’re on a travel team now or about to be. You want to support them. And maybe—just maybe—a better bat will help.
Here’s what actually matters
Bat performance depends on three things: the swing speed of the kid, the sweet spot of the bat, and the league rules.
Your 11-year-old’s swing speed is still changing. Two years ago, a 28-inch bat was right. Now they’re 29 or 30. In two years, they might be 31 or 32. The bat they beg for today may be too small in eighth grade.
The sweet spot matters, but not as much as the swing path. A bad swing with a perfect bat is still a bad swing. A good swing with a mid-tier bat is still a good hit.
League rules are real. Little League has one set of bat specs. Travel ball has another. A banned bat in one league is legal in another. Check your league’s bat rules before you buy.
The expensive bat math
A $250 composite bat is objectively better than a $80 composite bat. It’s balanced differently. The sweet spot is bigger. The feel is refined.
But the difference in exit velocity for an 11-year-old? About 2-3 mph. That’s measurable but small.

The no-name bats are fine. They’re legal. They perform. But your kid is 11 and standing next to Grayson with his obvious brand bat. The psychology is real.
Splitting the difference: buy a quality mid-tier brand bat. Not the cheapest. Not the most expensive. The one that’s $120-150. Your kid recognizes the brand. It’s a legitimate upgrade from the bat they’re using. You didn’t break the bank.
The size question
A 28-inch bat at 11 is common. Some kids are ready for 29 or 30. The weight drop is usually -10, -11, or -12.
A drop-10 is stiffer and heavier. Better for kids with faster swings. A drop-12 is lighter and whippier. Better for kids building bat speed.

Some sports stores have a 30-day return policy on bats. Swing the bat you’re thinking about buying. Keep the receipt. If the kid loves it and uses it, you’re done. If it feels off after a week of practice, you return it.
This is smart for $250 bats. Less critical for $120 bats, but still worth doing.

Buy the mid-tier bat ($120-150) in the size that matches the kid’s current frame, from a brand the kid recognizes. Support the upgrade. Mean it. Explain that as they grow, they get new equipment.
In eighth grade, if they’re still playing, revisit the expensive bats. By then, they’ll be ready, and they’ll have earned the upgrade.
Your kid doesn’t need the $250 bat to be good. They need good coaching, real practice, and the right swing path. The bat is one tool. Don’t mistake it for the whole game.
