Softball and baseball share most of the basic structure but differ in important ways.
Pitching is windmill, underhand. The pitcher’s motion looks dramatically different from baseball. Top youth pitchers throw 50-65 mph; HS pitchers can throw 60-70 mph. Because the distance is shorter, reaction time at the plate is comparable to MLB-level fastballs.
The ball is bigger and bright yellow. 12-inch circumference (softball) vs 9-inch (baseball). The yellow color is required for visibility.
Stealing rules at the youth level. In Little League softball, runners cannot lead off the base before the pitch is released. They can only leave once the pitch has crossed the plate. This is different from baseball at older ages.
Bat standards. Most youth softball uses USA Softball-certified bats. Travel and HS often allow USSSA-certified bats. Check the league rule before buying.
The DP/Flex rule. At higher levels, fastpitch uses a Designated Player (DP) and Flex player rule that lets coaches sub a hitter in for a pitcher (or vice versa) without losing the player from the game. Complex; ask the coach to explain at your kid’s level.
