Basketball is the most over-coached and over-trained sport in youth athletics. Every kid has a trainer. Every kid is in AAU. Almost none of it is necessary before 12.

The pattern that produces high school varsity players is boring: play in school programs, play AAU at a moderate level, work on skills consistently in the off-season, lift in high school, sleep enough. The high-end private trainer at $150/hour is rarely the variable.

The exception is shooting. Shooting form does benefit from a trained eye early, especially around 11-13 when bodies change and old habits start showing up as misses. One good shooting trainer at this age is worth more than a year of skills work.
