12U AAU basketball does not have a real off-season unless the family decides to take one. The structure of the youth basketball calendar pushes families toward practicing or playing eleven months a year.

The two-week shutdown in August is the only honest rest most kids get. Take it. The AAP recommendation for youth athletes is at least two months total away from a single sport per year and one full day off per week. In year-round travel basketball, both of those targets are usually broken.

The other thing this calendar surfaces: the tournament cost. From March through July, plan on roughly $300–$700 per weekend (registration plus hotel plus gas plus food on the road). Run those numbers through the cost calculator before you commit to the spring tournament schedule.

A note for families with one kid in school basketball and one in AAU: October is the conflict month. School tryouts and AAU practice run at the same time. The coaches will not coordinate unless the parents make them.
