A few specifics.
Boat types.
- Sweep: each rower has one oar. Boats: pair (2-), four (4+ with cox or 4- without), eight (8+ always with cox).
- Sculling: each rower has two oars. Boats: single (1x), double (2x), quad (4x).
Standard youth distances. 1,500m at U17 and below. 2,000m at U19+ and HS+. Head races (head-to-head time trials) are 4-6 km in fall.
Equipment is mostly club-provided. Boats, oars, rigging, all stays at the boathouse. Athletes provide: spandex unisuit, water bottle, splits watch (some clubs).
Practice intensity is significant. Year-round programs practice 5-6 days per week. Erg work in winter; on-the-water in spring and fall. Long sessions: 90 minutes to 2.5 hours.
Cold-weather and water-safety. Most clubs have cold-weather safety rules (water temperature thresholds for going out). Capsizes happen. Swim test required to row at most clubs.
Recruiting. Crew is one of the more recruitable sports for academically strong students because Ivy League and other top academic schools have strong programs and the path values both athletic ability and academic profile. Erg score, technique, coxswain experience all matter.
